With his trademark sarcasm, Dr Mahathir Mahathir is taking credit for the potential development to take place in Pulau Tuba, Langkawi.
In a blog post, the former premier said if Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak gets wind of his plan to visit the island, Najib would beat him to it.
“Pulau Tuba will get a mini stadium and tar roads from Najib because of my plan to visit the island.
“I wish to express my many thanks to the honourable prime minister for willing to share 1MDB funds with the people,” he added.
Najib has repeatedly denied taking 1MDB funds, saying he has never abused public coffers for personal gain.
Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has also cleared the prime minister, who has blamed such allegations on Mahathir and those conspiring to topple him from power, of any wrongdoing.
Mahathir has been busy campaigning against Najib in Langkawi of late on the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) platform.
The island is also a Parliamentary constituency. The current MP is Umno's Nawawi Ahmad.
As one of Kedah's most celebrated figures, Mahathir is revered on the island, which also plays host to Galeria Perdana, a muzium which houses gifts the former premier had received from around the world.- Mkini
