Anwar Ibrahim wants an amicable settlement to the case of the four academicians under fire for submitting an allegedly biased report on the Rome Statute.
The Port Dickson MP said the explanation of the academicians should be received as part of a healthy discourse.
“They are academic experts, and there is a process of healthy discourse, with questions and answers,” Anwar said when met at the lobby of Parliament today.
They should be given a chance to explain their viewpoint, he added.
Last Friday, a group of student activists revealed the executive summary of the paperwork by four academicians, which was allegedly used to convince the Conference of Rulers to reject the International Criminal Court (ICC) Statute of Rome.
"The arguments in the paper were very biased as they (the academicians) only discussed why the Conference of Rulers should reject the Rome Statute.
"We are making this revelation to create a dialogue among academicians at all levels," the student group said in a statement.

The paper was prepared by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) law professor Rahmat Mohamad, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) law professor Shamrahayu Abdul Aziz and Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (Usim) law lecturers Fareed Mohd Hassan and Hisham Hanapi.
Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching (photo, above) was initially reported as saying that that the status of the quartet would be discussed.
The statement led the student activists to release another statement calling on the government to respect academic freedom.
However, Teo went on to clarify that she had not made any mention of the position of the academicians being called into question.
"When asked in Parliament, my answer was that there has so far been no discussion at the ministry level over allegations raised by the students against the academicians,” she said.
Teo added that she had asked for time for the matter to be studied and discussed thoroughly. - Mkini
