Some 300 applications were made seeking aid through the newly launched food bank programme at the Lembah Subang people's housing project (PPR).
Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah said 114 families were granted the aid after a vetting process.
"The application to join the (food bank) programme was opened to residents of Lembah Subang PPR on April 6.
"After conducting a survey we found many residents here need help, therefore, we reopened the application which received a good response from the residents," she told journalists after officiating a food bank in a hall at Lembah Subang PPR.
Maria said the selection process was based on a number of set criteria.
She added that the condition was for families earning less than RM1,500, disabled persons, single parents or senior citizens living alone.
The food bank programme was launched by Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on Dec 22 last year.
The programme seeks to redistribute surplus food from supermarkets to the needy.
Also present was Seri Setia assemblyperson Halimey Abu Bakar.
"We know Lembah Subang is an area that requires attention.
"However, I will also discuss with Maria to also expand this initiative to other parts of Selangor," he said. - Mkini
