‘They give all kinds of excuses’

KOTA KINABALU: “adamant” motorists on the road during the movement control order (MCO) give all kinds of excuses to the police.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Zaini Jass observed at one police roadblock in Penampang near here that many couples were going out together.
“When questioned, they would tell us that they were sending their wife to work. We advised them to let the wife drive to work herself as there is no need for two people to go out of the house, ” he told reporters after attending the state-level National Security Council meeting chaired by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal yesterday.
Comm Zaini also observed that many people told police they were heading to stores that were far away from their respective areas.
“There are sundry shops within their own areas. There is no need to go far away just to buy things, ” he said.
He said police were not issuing summons or taking action at present.
“If someone challenges or tries to prevent us from discharging our duties, then we will act, ” he said, urging people to abide by the order as it was for their own good.
Comm Zaini added that Sabah’s crime rate saw a major drop, as 92% of people complied with the MCO by staying home and taking trips only to obtain daily essentials.
However, Comm Zaini said he did not have immediate figures for the drop in serious crime and house break-in cases, among others. - Star
