PARLIAMENT | Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun rejected a written motion seeking an order for Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing to apologise over his "takut mati" remarks against Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
At the end of question time in the Dewan Rakyat this morning, Azhar said he had rejected the written motion by RSN Rayer (Harapan-Jelutong) on technical grounds and not on merit.
"Actually, I did not reject the motion on its merit, but rather on its procedure because Yang Berhormat (Rayer) submitted a motion for me to review a ruling by deputy speaker (Azalina Othman Said).
"Under Standing Order 40(3), I don't have powers to do that. The power to review a ruling made by a speaker or deputy speaker lies with the House," he said in response to Rayer who stood up to inquire about the rejection of his motion.
Last Wednesday, Azalina had ruled that Tiong could either apologise or explain his remarks against Noor Hisham which sparked a heated outcry which ended in Rayer being ejected from the House.
Rayer was ejected for refusing to follow Azalina's order to sit down. This after the outburst sparked by demands for Tiong to apologise for questioning if Noor Hisham was "afraid to die" as he purportedly did not personally visit Sabah to monitor the Covid-19 situation there.
Rayer also said Tiong, who had issued a statement of apology, must repeat the apology in the Dewan Rakyat.
Rayer today thanked Azhar for answering his question and he also requested the speaker to reconsider a five-day suspension issued against Lim Lip Eng (Pakatan Harapan-Kepong) last week for calling Azalina's ruling "stupid".
"I am easy. If people are calm with me, I will be calm with them.
"My office door is open all the time, so if YB Kepong wants to meet me, I am always ready to meet him," said Azhar shortly before proceeding with the day's debates on the Supply Bill 2020. - Mkini
