PARLIAMENT | The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry's Talian Kasih 24-hour hotline has recorded 70,177 inquiries on welfare assistance this year, forming the bulk of 159,703 complaints received via calls and WhatsApp messages.
Other complaints include 4,119 counselling inquiries and 2,287 allegations of domestic abuse, according to its deputy minister Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff.
Responding to Kasthuri Patto (Harapan-Batu Kawan), the Rantau Panjang MP said complaints received via the 24-hour service were forwarded to relevant agencies including the Welfare Department for further action.
"All complaints and applications forwarded will be dealt with by assigned officers at the district or state level.
"Feedback will be communicated back to Talian Kasih after investigations have been completed," she said, adding that a case will be considered closed after all information has been relayed.
Overall, Siti Zailah said 85,074 cases of the total complaints received were handled by agencies under the ministry's purview, while the remainder comprises matters under police investigation.
In the last Parliament session, Siti Zailah (above) had revealed police statistics of domestic violence involving women, with 2,904 cases recorded from Jan 1 to Aug 20.
Last month, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rina Harun said there was a surge in complaints received via Talian Kasih during the third-wave of Covid-19 infections.
She reportedly said 12,240 cases were received last month, up from 6,770 cases in September.
Earlier this year, the All Women's Action Society had also raised concerns over an increase in reported cases of rape, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and mental health issues handled by its Telenita hotline during the movement control order (MCO) period which began on March 18. - Mkini
