PKR women’s wing leadership will be joining in the United Nations’ “Orange the World” awareness campaign on gender-based violence, which will run for 16 days from Nov 25 to Dec 10, 2020.
“The campaign is meant to raise awareness on gender-based violence. To show our solidarity on this issue, in our efforts to stop violence against women and return their rights, the PKR women’s central leadership has also taken the initiative to wear orange to boost the campaign,” said Lembah Pantai Wanita PKR chief Raiyan Abdul Rahim in a statement today.
Selangor Aduns will also participate in the campaign, including Kota Anggerik Adun Najwan Halimi, she added.
Raiyan said violence against women is very widespread today, in the form of physical, sexual and mental violations.
The Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the movement control orders (MCO), have seen an increase in such violence and other incidents such as divorces, she said.
Wanita PKR chief Fuziah Salleh has stressed that women leaders must be aware and thoroughly understand issues related to women’s rights and welfare, Raiyan said.
“She (Fuziah) also insisted on the roles and involvement of women at every level of leadership including state and federal governments,” she said.
Raiyan said she hopes this 16-day campaign can help raise awareness on how important it is to defend the rights and welfare of women, as violence and discrimination against women is still a massive problem in the society.
“That’s why, let’s paint the world orange together,” she said. - Mkini
