PETALING JAYA: Police are investigating a video that has gone viral showing Rohingya children begging on the streets.

Kuala Lumpur criminal investigation department head Saiful Annuar Yusoff said they were trying to identify the children.

The video showed Rohingya children going from car to car and asking the drivers for money in an aggressive manner.

Saiful believed the incident took place in Kuala Lumpur.

In a statement today, he said police were investigating the case under the Child Act 2001, the Penal Code and the Minor Offences Act 1955 (revised 1987).

He said that under Section 32 of the Child Act 2001, police could act against anyone found guilty of abusing, sexually abusing, neglecting, abandoning or exposing any child under their care in a manner likely to cause the child physical or emotional injury.

If convicted, the offender may be fined up to RM50,000 or jailed for up to 20 years, or both.

Under Section 283 of the Penal Code, an individual found guilty of causing danger or obstruction on a public road may be fined up to RM400.

Under Section 27 (c) of the Minor Offences Act 1955, those found begging in a public place may be fined up to RM100 or jailed for up to one month, or both.

Saiful urged the public to call the nearest police station if they spot these Rohingya children begging. - FMT
