The Health Ministry reported 3,543 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,776,699.
The fresh infections were more than the number of Covid-19 patients who recovered, which totalled 3,484. This is expected to contribute to a rise in the number of active cases.
The infectivity rate declined to 0.97 as of yesterday after being stagnant at 0.99 for almost a week.
However, some states are reporting R-numbers above 1.00, namely Sabah (1.03) and Perlis (1.01).
The value must be kept under 1.00 to prevent the exponential growth of fresh infections.
- Patients in ICU: 253
- Intubated: 130
As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 10.0 percent lower compared to a week ago.
Those who require intubation have also declined by 16.1 percent from a week ago.
Nationally, the number of hospital admissions of confirmed Covid-19 patients in the last seven days have declined by 5.5 percent compared to the preceding week.
To date, 190 Covid-19 clusters are still active, including 7 new clusters reported today.
The ongoing clusters have fallen by 14.0 percent from the 221 active clusters a week ago.
The Health Ministry will only publish today's breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal.
The breakdown by states for yesterday (Jan 5), where 3,270 new cases were reported, is as follows:

The number of patients in intensive care is continuing on a sustained downtrend.
As of today, there were 253 Covid-19 patients in intensive care of which 130 require intubation.
The number of patients in ICU is 10 percent lower compared to a week ago.
The Health Ministry is currently tracking 190 active Covid-19 clusters. Another seven new clusters were classified today.
The number of active clusters have dropped 14 percent compared to a week ago.
