Defiant Azam vows to fight accusations, keep working

 

Embattled MACC chief Azam Baki has vowed to fight allegations of misconduct.

This is amid a police probe against him after it emerged that he owned millions in shares and warrants in two publicly listed companies during his tenure as MACC investigations director.

The MACC chief claimed his brother had used his account to buy the shares and has denied wrongdoing.

"I have all the documents, I will fight," Azam (above) was quoted as saying by MStar today.

Asked how he was, he replied to the Malay portal: "I'm okay, still working and not on leave".

Separately, Berita Harian cited Azam as saying that he was prepared to face the MACC complaints committee and will leave matters to the graft buster's advisory board.

MACC Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) chairperson Abu Zahar Ujang had previously defended Azam and cleared him of wrongdoing.

However, the six other members of the board have disputed this, saying Abu Zahar was only speaking for himself.

The board members said they had proposed that Azam's case be further referred to either an independent committee, the parliamentary select committee on corruption, or MACC's complaints panel.

However, they said this view was not expressed by Abu Zahar during Wednesday's press conference.

They also stressed that the panel has no investigation powers as it is established as an advisory board.

Azam's share ownership had raised questions on whether it was commensurate with his income as a public servant and conflict of interest concerns. - Mkini
