KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to misappropriating US$6.94 million (about RM29 million) seized by the agency.

Shahrum Nizam Baharuddin was slapped with one charge under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust (CBT).

He is alleged to have committed the offence between Dec 17, 2018 and April 9, 2019 at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

If found guilty, Shahrum, 40, will face a jail term of between two and 20 years, with whipping as well as a fine.

MACC had previously confirmed that three of its senior officers had been arrested to assist in investigations into allegations of abuse of power and malpractice in the case of the former head of the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation, Hasanah Ab Hamid.
