Admit fault in Bukit Cerakah issue - Selangor MB to predecessor

Former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo was told to take responsibility for the Bukit Cerakah forest reserve degazettement controversy.

Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari (above, right) said his predecessor, who led the BN state government from 2000 to 2008, should not pass the buck to Pakatan Harapan.

“He (Khir) has to look at himself in the mirror when he hurled the accusation.

“The agreement (to degazette part of the Bukit Cerakah forest reserve) exposed the state government to a lawsuit where millions will be spent on the land acquisition in 2008.

“So, he cannot just pass the buck… He has to be a responsible (former) menteri besar,” said Amirudin.

He said this to the media while attending an event in Petaling Jaya today.

Yesterday, Khir (above, left) reportedly told Amirudin not to blame the BN administration over the degazettement of parts of the forest reserve.

The former state leader was quoted by Free Malaysia Today as saying that Harapan, which has governed Selangor since 2008, has the authority to stop any development.

Pressure has been mounting against the state government to revoke the degazettement of parts of Bukit Cerakah Forest Reserve.

A group of civil society organisations (CSOs) said the state failed to comply with Section 12 of Selangor's Natural Forestry Act 1985 (NFA), where replacement land should be provided as a permanent reserve forest of the same size.

In May, Amirudin said the state government would continue the degazettement process that was halted in 2006 to avoid the risk of facing legal action from companies with an interest in the land.

The degazetting process took place from around 1991 to 2006, including an area covering 406.22 hectares.

The remaining land of Bukit Cerakah Forest Reserve is about 1,298.86 hectares and the Bukit Cerakah Additional Forest Reserve is 982.80 hectares.

In another development, Amirudin said he was undecided whether to hold the next state election concurrently with the federal election if Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob were to dissolve the Parliament this year.

"It has not come to my dreams yet. I still need inspiration from my dream. We will discuss it at every level. Of course, I need to seek guidance from the state ruler and the (Pakatan Harapan) top leadership," he said.

"Of course, we want to win and defend the state so that we can secure a two-thirds majority. At least, we want to get a sustainable majority for the government that we will form in the future,” he said. - Mkini
