Umno Youth reminds PAS of rewards it received via Muafakat Nasional

Umno Youth today reminded PAS how members of the party were rewarded with positions while its elected representatives received allocations because of the Muafakat Nasional (MN) pact between the parties.

Yet, Umno assemblypersons have to clamour for due allocations in PAS-led states, the youth wing’s communications director Syed Mohd Johan Rizal Syed Unan Mashri (above) said.

“When Umno celebrated being part of MN, many PAS folks received positions, including in Johor and Pahang. They were given positions in the menteri besar’s office, positions were also created so PAS members could be appointed.

“Yet, we see in Johor that PAS has forgotten the good deeds (of Umno) and worked with Bersatu against Umno in the state election.

“Also, don’t forget that the Perlis and Pahang governments also provided allocations of tens of thousands of ringgit a month to PAS assemblypersons in the name of MN. Even appointments in government-linked companies are still maintained.

“Yet, in Terengganu, Umno representatives there are sidelined for the Covid-19 special allocation, that Umno has to make noise just to get a bit of funds, albeit lesser compared to what PAS assemblypersons received,” he said in a statement today.

Umno and PAS leaders signing the Muafakat Nasional political pact

Although he did not go into details, Syed Johan Rizal’s statement is believed to be in response to PAS youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari.

Fadhil said the PAS-led Kelantan and Terengganu governments continue to provide allocations to Umno assemblypersons there even without reciprocal support.

‘Don’t blame us for poor governance’

Commenting further, Syed Johan said Umno is fortunate not to hold any positions in PAS-led governments because it can escape criticism over poor performance by the east coast state administrations.

“If Umno governs Kelantan, I am certain Kelantan residents would enjoy new and comfortable bus stations compared to the PAS government-built station, which looks like a cow pen.

“Even on the issue of water, we see that Kelantan and Kedah are in the same boat,” he said, referring to water supply issues faced by residents in the two PAS-led states.

MN was a loose pact between Umno and PAS formed when Pakatan Harapan came into power after the 2018 general election.

The existence of the pact is now questionable after PAS’ move to work with Bersatu against Umno in the Malacca and Johor state elections.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, however, said the Islamist party wants the pact to continue in the name of unity and national stability. - Mkini
