Afif: Anwar adopting 'Mao-style' demonising of dissidents

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has been accused of adopting "communist-style" politics intolerant of dissent following his speech at a rally recently.

In a statement, Seberang Jaya assemblyperson Dr Afif Bahardin said the speech, in which Anwar attacked those who have defected from Pakatan Harapan, was filled with abuses and name calling rather than policies.

"Listening to his speech, one would have thought Malaysia was no longer a democratic country where anyone has the right to leave a political party for another.

"This is the exact language applied by authoritarian polities and dictatorships against anyone who goes against the party line or leadership," said Afif.

Afif urged Malaysians to be wary of PKR because the party resorted to "communist-style politics of hatred and name-calling".

"It is only in Mao-style communism that anyone who leaves his party is condemned as a traitor, not in democracies," said Afif.

On Sunday, PKR kicked off their "mega" roadshow in Gombak, Selangor. The venue choice was symbolic because the Gombak parliamentary constituency was held by Azmin Ali.

Azmin defected from PKR in February 2020 and was a key figure in the Sheraton Move which led to the fall of the Pakatan Harapan federal government.

Afif, who left PKR two months after Azmin, argued that the defections at the time were caused by Anwar.

He argued that Anwar and his allies were actively undermining the government at the time in a bid to make Anwar the prime minister.

"It is our firm principle in Perikatan Nasional, especially Bersatu, that we do not drag voters into party factionalism or party politics or narrow party interests.

"Instead, we should be addressing the real needs of the rakyat which are the economy, education and the welfare of those who need assistance.

"In short, the bread and butter issues which impact the people, and not about who wants to be prime minister which is the permanent obsession of PKR and Anwar," he said. - Mkini
