PETALING JAYA: Klang MP Charles Santiago of DAP has urged the finance ministry to set up a special task force to tackle the increasing number of bank fraud cases.
He said that in the latest fraud case brought to him, three victims had suffered losses of more than RM128,000.
Santiago said the task force could carry out a pilot project to monitor the security systems at banks in the district.
He also urged the Association of Banks in Malaysia to look into a monitoring system, to ensure that member banks take adequate steps to prevent cyberattacks.
Santiago said the three new victims were dissatisfied at being left without information on what was being done. “Neither the bank, the police nor Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) could inform them of their situation,” he said on Twitter.
Last week, FMT reported that an increasing number of fraud cases had been landing on Santiago’s desk, with the latest at the time involving a woman who said she lost RM39,000.
In June, Santiago brought up the case of 40 premium account holders at a Klang bank who lost millions of ringgit through fraud allegedly perpetrated by a bank officer.
Santiago said the bank, the police and BNM should provide fresh information about the case as it had been six months since complaints were lodged. - FMT
