PETALING JAYA: Malaysia hopes to achieve a 50% public transport share by 2040, with at least 38% electric vehicle (EV) usage targeted by the same year.
These are just two of the targets under the government’s Low Carbon Aspiration 2040 initiative that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced today.
The other targets include introducing fuel with a 30% biodiesel (B30) mixture as an alternative fuel for heavy vehicles, and a 25% use of liquified natural gas as an alternative fuel in the marine transport industry.
The Low Carbon Aspiration 2040, which is part of the newly-launched National Energy Policy 2022-2040, also targets energy efficiency savings of up to 11% for commercial and industrial use, and 10% for residences by 2040.
“The holistic implementation of this aspiration is expected to increase the gross domestic product (GDP) by an average of RM13 billion a year and create more than 207,000 new job opportunities,” he said.
According to Ismail, 12 strategies and 31 action plans have been identified to achieve the goals of the National Energy Policy 2022-2040, which will be implemented in line with the country’s five-year plans.
He said that he will chair a newly-formed National Energy Council which was created to ensure that the National Energy Policy’s initiatives are implemented effectively by the relevant ministries and agencies.
Ismail added that the National Energy Policy was a “living document” that would be updated every three years after a review by the council in line with developments in technology as well as the country’s socioeconomic level and energy needs.
He said the country’s energy sector is about to “open a new chapter” in parallel with the global emergence of new sectors such as low-carbon mobility through the use of EVs, as well as the generation and storage of new energy sources, such as hydrogen and bio-based energy. - FMT
