PETALING JAYA: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Hajiji Noor has assumed control of local party Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) two months after he led a group of supporters out of Sabah Bersatu.
He was named president of Gagasan Rakyat at an extraordinary general meeting of the party today, replacing Stephen Jimbangan who resigned in December.
Hajiji, who is also the chief minister, said his party would now be part of GRS, the state’s governing coalition. He said GRS had long yearned for a truly local party to be part of the coalition. “Now, we (GRS) are 100% local,” he said in a Facebook post.
He said he and his friends had joined Gagasan Rakyat because “it is a multi-racial party that symbolises inclusivity and it also represents the voice of Sabahans”.
He said Gagasan Rakyat’s agenda was also in line with the four pillars of the GRS struggle to put Sabah first.
Hajiji said being a local party did not mean Sabah rejected the national agenda or placed less emphasis on national importance.
He said he would explain in greater detail the direction of Gagasan Rakyat on March 2.
Hajiji said the party would establish its presence in all 73 state constituencies including the formation of its Wanita, Pemuda and Beliawanis wings.
Branch and divisional general meetings are scheduled for July and September, and the party would hold its annual congress in November.
Hajiji also announced the party’s leadership lineup, with further appointments to be made soon.
