Quarry worker killed when boulder falls onto lorry in Ipoh

IPOH: A 53-year-old quarry worker was killed when a boulder fell onto the lorry he was driving at a quarry in Keramat Pulai here today.

The victim, identified as M. Sivakumar, was trapped in the lorry following the incident at the quarry in Keramat Pulai, Kampung Kepayang.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the department received a distress call at 5.18pm.

He said firefighters from the Simpang Pulai and Gopeng Fire and Rescue stations arrived at the scene at 5.29pm.

"Initial information indicated that a lorry carrying quarry rocks was crushed by a boulder while quarrying work was being carried out.

"The victim was trapped inside the lorry and was later pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel," he said in a statement today.

He said firefighters used hydraulic equipment to extricate the victim.

He said Sivakumar was removed from the lorry before his remains were handed over to police.

A total of 12 firefighters were involved in the operation. - NST
