39 “perfect students” failed varsity entry as courses full, requirements not met

The 39 students with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0 did not gain a place in public universities because the courses were already full and some did not meet the requirements, says the Education Ministry.
The Star today reported the a ministry spokesman as saying the students had also indicated that they would not accept courses that were not in their option. Among the popular courses were medicine and dentistry.
The spokesman added that the 39 students could have failed in their interviews or didn't score well in extra-curricular activities.
Besides passing interviews or eligibility tests, the students must also obtain Band One in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET).
The spokesman said since 2002, students’ applications were evaluated according to merit, with a 90 percent weightage on academic score and 10 percent extra-curricular activities.
It was no longer based on a racial quota system as practised previously.
A total of 68,702 students with Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), matriculation or foundation studies, applied for places at public universities this year.
Only 41,573 were offered places and 1 percent, or 39 out of 3,584, who had obtained a CGPA of 4.0 failed to gain a place in public universities for the 2013/14 intake, the spokesman said.
But the spokesman said the 39 would be given priority to enter public universities based on vacancies and hoped they would appeal as soon as possible.
