Cops confirm dog trainer is a suspect, not witness

The police have confirmed that the dog trainer Maznah Mohd Yusof is a suspect and not a witness.

"Yes, she is a suspect," said investigation officer Othman Mantaha when contacted today.

However, he declined to elaborate on the reasons why Maznah is held to bond instead of using other procedures.

Earlier there was confusion on whether Maznah is a suspect or a witness following the police's application under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) to hold her under this provision, normally used on witnesses and complainants, but not a suspect.

NONEMaznah's lawyer Latheefa Koya (right) had complained that the ‘wrong procedure' was being used.

Speaking to Malayskiakinitoday, she said the appropriate procedure is to hold her under police bail - which does not involve any money - or to compel her to give a statement when required, by using a court order under Section 111 of the CPC.
'Causing disharmony'
Maznah, who also goes by the moniker ‘Chetz' is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code, which deals with causing disharmony on grounds of religion, and Section 4 of the Sedition Act.

She has been released on a RM10,000 bond yesterday with her sister as surety, pending further investigations.

She had uploaded a Hari Raya greeting video on YouTube three years ago, which among others, showed her cleaning her feet and then her dog's leg while the takbir raya - Muslim call for prayer reserved for Hari Raya - and a Hari Raya song played in the background.

The video has resurfaced recently under the title ‘Video Menghina Islam. 1 Hari di Hari Raya' (Video insulting to Islam: A day in Hari Raya), and drew flak from various right-wing groups.

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) later declared that the video was insulting to Islam.
