DAP lodges report over DPM's 'seditious' remarks

A police report has been filed against Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin with regard to his remarks on the controversial dog-trainer video.

NONEIn his report, Taman Segambut DAP branch chairperson Yew Jia Haur (left) said the police must investigate if Muhyiddin's remarks had violated the Penal Code and Sedition Act.

Jia filed his report with the Jinjang police station in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Prior to the identity of the person in the video being established as a Muslim, Muhyiddin had lamented that "the callousness of some towards Islam and Muslim sensitivities" could spark disharmony among Malaysians.

"Is this a manifestation of the assumption of some quarters that we (Muslims) are weak and that they could walk all over us? Or that we are afraid to react when others insult the sanctity of Islam?" the deputy prime minister had said during a breaking of fast event in Putrajaya.

"No Muslim has made fun of other faiths," he had added.

Tomorrow, the Malaysian Indian Progressive Association (Mipas) would also file a police report against Muhyiddin.

In a Malaysiakini article earlier, Mipas secretary-general S Barathidasan took the deputy prime minister to task, reminding him that he represented all Malaysians.

NONE"Muhyiddin had jumped the gun and suggested that a non-Muslim was behind the video. Such an action was both unbecoming and irresponsible.

"As the deputy prime minister, he should have checked the facts first before shooting off his mouth," he had said.

Former Bar Council president S Ambiga had also criticised the deputy prime minister over his provocative remark.

Although she did not advocate the use of the Sedition Act, she, however, chided Muhyiddin for not withdrawing or aplogising for his erroneous statement.

She pointed out that failure to retract or apologise was tantamount to misleading the public.
