GEORGE TOWN: Three people, including a French senior manager and his Malaysian girlfriend, were beaten up by a group of men at a pub here early today.
The 2am incident on Jalan Penang broke out following a heated argument between the Frenchman, who is in his 30s, and another man.
A police spokesman said initial investigations showed that nine people had attacked the Frenchmen after the misunderstanding.
"The Frenchman argued with the man. The latter then left the pub briefly before returning with eight people.
"They cornered the foreigner and clobbered him, leaving him with injuries on his face and head," he said.
The policeman also said the victim's girlfriend and another friend were also hurt after they tried to stop the fight.
The trio received outpatient treatment at the Penang Hospital before they lodged a police report, he said.
Northeast district deputy police chief Superintendent Ismail Idris, who confirmed the incident, said the police would be getting a closed circuit television (CCTV) footage from the pub management to assist their investigations.
No arrests have been made in connection with the incident so far, he added.
