MCA leader: Dog video irresponsible, provocative

The recent Hari Raya greeting video which landed dog trainer Maznah Mohd Yusof in trouble with authorities was "provocative and displayed irresponsible behaviour", said an MCA leader.

NONEMCA's publicity bureau chairperson Heng Seai Kie (left) in a statement today criticised the video and also labelled its timing as "regrettable."

"It is regrettable that this video comes at the heels of similar incidents (such as) the Alvivi buka puasa greeting, shower room canteen controversy and 'balik India dan China' slurs by a school principal," she said.

"It is not wrong for anyone to make festive greetings, but one should be mindful of the sensitivities of each and every single race, culture and religion. Whether the person made such a video out of ignorance or even though with good intent, it should be avoided," she added.

Meanwhile, Heng also asked politicians to investigate any incident first before making any comments "to score political points."

"Although we understand that many political parties are now in the process of holding their party elections, we urge all quarters to be cautious with whatever comments they utter. Please do not sacrifice national unity for personal political agenda," she said.

Heng also urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take immediate action and prevent the Hari Raya greeting video from being spread further.

The video, which displayed Maznah, known as Chetz, feeding cookies and washing the dogs' paws while wearing a baju melayu, caught the attention of the public since yesterday, with many claiming that the video was an insult to Islam.

She has since been arrested, and was kept at the Bukit Perdana commercial crimes investigations department headquarters before being brought to Segamat, where she has been remanded by the police until tomorrow.
