Minister: No delay, Sanjeevan not ready for surgery

Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam explained that surgery for MyWatch chairperson R Sri Sanjeevan is not being delayed by any other reason, other than the patient is not medically ready yet.

NONEThe minister (right) said while the patient's condition is improving, it is medically prudent to wait until conditions are right for him to undergo critical surgery to remove a bullet lodged in his ribcage

The crime watchdog NGO leader was shot at in Jempol, Negri Sembilan last Saturday by two men on a motorcycle.

He is currently warded at Serdang Hospital after being transferred from other hospitals in Negeri Sembilan.
"His condition is improving. The bullet is there but it is not causing problems at this moment," Subramaniam said.

"The reason why surgery has not been done is because the acute problem is not so much with the bullet, but the damage it has caused in reaching where it is now."
Healthcare sector boost

Subramaniam said that any delay in treating Sanjeevan was purely on medical grounds, and the same procedures would be followed "for the prime minister or someone of his stature."

He said that doctors were trying to stabilise Sanjeevan's breathing and blood pressure before performing the surgery.

Subramaniam said this during a press conference to announce the ministry's National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) achievements.

He said that through opening up of the sector to draw more private investors, the ministry of health could raise healthcare sector contribution to 7 percent of Malaysia's GDP by 2020, compared to 4.4 percent in 2011.

Subramaniam also announced five new healthcare projects that would draw RM388.1 million investments and create 1,599 new jobs by 2020.

The projects, mostly for manufacturing of medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, can be expected to contribute RM445.2 million to Malaysia's Gross National Income, he said.
