Police NOT doing their job - MIC

Police NOT doing their job - MIC
PETALING JAYA,— The police are not doing their duty to curb the proliferation and public display of gang activities such as those at funerals.
Twenty years ago, such things would not have happened on our streets, said MIC Youth chief T. Mohan.
“Gangs are openly displaying their gang numbers during funerals and uploading them onto the Internet,” he said.
“This action by them shows that they are willing to defy the police and are brave enough to carry out these acts in front of the police.”
He said police officers knew their identities and what gang they belonged to, “so it's time for the police to act”.
Mohan said a number of Indian youths were involved in these activities and the police should use force to stop their activities.
“Many of them are joining gangs because of social problems. Now is the time to fight fire with fire. The police must let them know who is in charge.”
He said efforts should be stepped up to prevent Indian youths from joining gangs.
Mohan said one way was to give the youths a strong religious grounding.
He said the government could help by organising religious classes for Indian youths at primary schools.
“It may be too late to help the present generation but we can work on the next generation.
“I made more than 20 visits to the Simpang Renggam detention centre and found that 99 per cent of the Indians at the centre had very little religious knowledge.
“Even when praying most of them did not follow the correct way.”
Mohan said while there was a need to replace the Emergency Ordinance soonest, the replacement law should be looked into carefully.
He said to stop gun violence the police needed to step up enforcement at border areas.
“It is very easy for people to travel to borders such as Padang Besar and Golok because of the lack of supervision,” he said.
“People can just walk in and this makes it easier to smuggle in guns.
“The police must be more serious and carry out proper checks on everyone at the checkpoints.
“This may to some extent make the smugglers think twice about attempting to bring guns into the country.”
