Starting them young - how gangs recruit

Secret society recruitment begins in the school compound with secondary school students being recruited into the gangs and given drugs to distribute, said MyWatch co-founder S. Gobi Krishnan in a report in The Star today.
He said the gangs usually targeted youths who came from poor backgrounds or broken families or lived near the school as they were the most vulnerable and easily accessible.
Selling drugs was normally the first step, The Star quoted Gobi as saying, towards full initiation in the gang for the student members.
"The boys will earn a small cut from the drugs they have sold and they will be introduced to alcohol, girls and nightclubs. They eventually drop out of school."
"The inevitable step which follows is their 'big brother' sending them out to fight or kill someone from a rival group."
Gobi said the youths did not think twice about joining secret society gangs as for them, it offered a far more promising future than the bleak road currently ahead of them.
The Star quoted Gobi saying the youths would probably be killed if they attempted to leave the gang.
