allegations that politicians are backing criminal gangs, as reported by Sin Chew Daily.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pic) has denied
"Who said so...? So far I have never heard of any politicians involved in gangster societies.
"But if we investigate and find out that this is true, we will take the appropriate action," he told reporters after attending the Hari Raya open house at the Selangor police headquarters today.
According to the Malaysiakini news portal, Sin Chew Daily had yesterday reported that a number of local heavyweight politicians were backing secret criminal gangs, with several even becoming advisers to the triads.
These groups are part of 10 secret societies, comprising Chinese, Malay and Indian gangs.
Earlier today, the home ministry had declared 49 gangs as unlawful under the Societies Act 1966.
"So besides the Prevention of Crime Act 1959, now we can take action under the Societies Act 1966," said Khalid.
The IGP did not want to say which group was more dominant (over the others) but added they are all the same.
"They are gangster societies," he added.
