Unofficial: Hisham widens lead over Mukhriz

Incumbent Umno vice-presidents Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Shafie Apdal have retained their positions by a landslide at the party polls today, according to unofficial results.

NONEBoth Ahmad Zahid and Shafie have passed the 96-vote simple majority mark, while the third incumbent, Hishammuddin Hussein, is slowly catching up towards the coveted final vice-president spot.
Only 19 votes now separate Hishammuddin and challenger Mukhriz Mahathir.
About 137 out of 191 divisions have informally announced their results.

The other two challengers, Mohd Ali Rustam and Mohd Isa Samad have only pulled off a lackluster performance so far.

Below is the current unofficial results:
  1. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi -136
  2. Shafie Apdal -124
  3. Hishammuddin Hussein -78
  4. Mukhriz Mahathir - 59
  5. Mohd Ali Rustam -7
  6. Mohd Isa Samad -8

The results are correct as of 9pm.

Some 146,000 delegates cast their votes earlier today.

According to Umno Online, Umno executive secretary Ab Rauf Yusoh said official results will only be announced from 10pm.

This is the first time Umno has expanded its voting base to 146,000 delegates from the previous 2,500 delegates.

Under the new system, delegates will vote for their favourite candidates at the divisional level.

Candidates who garner the highest votes will win the division, and those who win the bulk of the party's 191 divisions nationwide will emerge victorious.

Umno has touted the new system as an attempt to democratise the party and to combat money politics.
