KUALA LUMPUR — The Election Commission (EC) will investigate allegations that the DAP was campaigning ahead of nominations for the Teluk Intan by-election.
EC secretary Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said the commission will check whether DAP’s speeches and walkabout conducted across the weekend amounted to a “premature’ campaign.
“I will ask the EC’s legal advisers. If anyone is found to have broken the law, we will pursue the matter,” he was quoted as saying by the English-language daily.
Campaigning may only start after nominations are concluded and must end at midnight on the eve of polling.
DAP’s named hopeful Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud reportedly spoke to the public and held a walkabout meeting residents at Teluk Intan during the weekend.
In a bid to shed its image as a predominantly Chinese party, DAP has picked a young Malay woman, Dyana, as its candidate for the by-election in Teluk Intan, a Chinese-majority constituency.
She is expected to face Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Mah Siew Keong.
The Teluk Intan by-election, which is scheduled on May 31, was triggered after DAP MP Seah Leong Peng recently died from cancer. - Malay Mail
