Alumni: UiTM critics 'enemy of the state'

The Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Alumni Association yesterday warned DAP's Teluk Intan candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud not to stir anti-Malay sentiments by questioning the university's status as a higher institution exclusively for bumiputeras.

“Anyone who questions or threatens UiTM's status is considered a traitor and enemy of the state who must be opposed at all cost," said the Alumni's secretary-general Shukri Ishak.

He said this while reading a declaration dubbed the 'Shah Alam Declaration' at the UiTM alumni house in Shah Alam.

Shukri was flanked by UiTM student council representatives and Malay rights group Perkasa members.

According to Shukri, UiTM was founded as an institution solely for Malays and Sabah and Sarawak bumiputeras in line with the Federal Constitution and the 'social contract'.

He, however, said that the declaration is not just directed at Dyana as there are many other UiTM critics.

Non-bumis can borrow from PTPTN

Dyana in an interview with Malaysiakini last year suggested that a public higher education similar to UiTM should be established for non-Malays.

"While I managed to get into UiTM, some of my (non-bumiputera) friends who had similar results were not accepted into public universities. They couldn't get any scholarship,” she toldMalaysiakini.

"So I think that's not fair. What would happen to my friends? Do they have to spend a lot of money to get into the private university?"

Asked of this, Shukri said there is no need for a public university specifically for non-Malays, as non-Malays can get into private universities with the help of the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN).

He said UiTM students, too, borrow from PTPTN to fund their studies.

"Maybe 30 years from now, the economic disparity between the races will be balanced.

“At that time, UiTM's role in balancing this will have been fulfilled, and maybe then UiTM can be open for all," he said.
