Cheers as Zahid bumps cash prize for 'no budget' Selangor Umno

Umno vice-presidents Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Hishammuddin Hussein came to Selangor Umno’s rescue when they bumped up prize money for member and voter registration drives by ten-folds today.

This is after a muted response from the 4000-plus Selangor Umno members, after its chief Noh Omar announced prize money of RM5,000 for the branch that registers the most members and voters.

Noh admitted that the seemingly low prize money was because Selangor Umno did not have sufficient have “enough budget”.

“But when it comes to competitions, Zahid likes such things, so maybe he will increase (the prize money),” he said.

This prompted Zahid, who was there to officiate the event, to announce that they will boost the prize money by ten-folds because they were in awe of the number of attendees.

“With this, we both agree to increase (the prize money). The first prize from RM5,000 to RM50,000, RM3,000 to RM30,000 and RM2,000 to RM20,000,” said Zahid to loud cheers from the audience.

He then joked that they can take the money from Hishammuddin after the event.

“Hishammuddin takes from me anyway and I will take from the treasurer,” he said, however reminding the audience how when one is working, it is not about the money.

The competitions were a form of motivation for Selangor Umno to wrest the state from the opposition in the next general election.

BN was defeated in Selangor in the 2008 general election and did worse in the 2013 general election when it won only 12 state assembly seats out of the 56 contested. -Mkini
