Consider making vaccinations mandatory, PM tells committee

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says compulsory vaccination may be needed if the number of registrations remains low.

PETALING JAYA: The Covid-19 Vaccine Supply Access Guarantee Special Committee (JKJAV) has been told by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to study making vaccinations mandatory.

Bernama quoted Muhyiddin as saying this needed to be considered if the number of registrations for vaccinations remains low and fails to meet the government’s target for herd immunity.

Muhyiddin also said Putrajaya was mulling taking action against those who were anti-vaccine.

Covid-19 vaccinations are currently not compulsory, with science, technology and innovation minister Khairy Jamaluddin saying in January that Putrajaya had no plans to make it mandatory.

As of midnight yesterday, more than 3.3 million vaccine doses have been administered.

Previously, police also said they would take firm action against those inciting people against taking the Covid-19 vaccine by monitoring social media for anti-vaccine sentiments.

Those found spreading fake news that can cause chaos and discomfort among the society may be prosecuted under the Emergency Ordinance.

Muhyiddin also called on Malaysians to enlist as volunteers to ensure the vaccination programme was successful.

He also called for more vaccination centres to be set up to expedite the immunisation programme and achieve herd immunity earlier.

He had said last week that the government still aims to complete the vaccination programme by the end of the year. - FMT
