PKR president Anwar Ibrahim today welcomed Muhyiddin Yassin's resignation as prime minister while Amanah president Mohamad Sabu responded by making overtures to former Pakatan Harapan MPs.
Anwar said Muhyiddin's resignation will create an opportunity for the country to change its trajectory.
"I urge everyone to remain calm and pray that Malaysia will come back stronger in facing the health and economic crisis. I thank him (Muhyiddin) for his service to the country," he said in a statement today.
The opposition leader is Harapan's only candidate, at least publicly, to replace Muhyiddin. However, at the time of writing, Anwar does not appear to command the numbers required to have him appointed to the top post.
Meanwhile, Mohamad urged MPs who left Harapan to return to the coalition in order to fulfil the mandate received during the 2018 elections.
"Let the past stay in the past. Let's write history for our country. In facing this difficult situation, we need to be magnanimous because the people want nothing more than our health and a strong economy," he said in a statement today.
"If the mandate given through elections is restored and Parliament is revived, no one will be left behind because the opposition will have their say in how to navigate Malaysia through this health crisis and rebuild the country's economy."
In February 2020, Bersatu withdrew from Harapan to form the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government alongside BN, PAS, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Parti Bersatu Sabah and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Rakyat Sabah (Star).
PKR too was hit by defections to PN. Bersatu splintered with six of its MPs choosing not to be in government.
Muhyiddin submitted his resignation today to Istana Negara and will now serve in a caretaker capacity until a new prime minister is appointed.
As for DAP, secretary-general Lim Guan Eng commended Muhyiddin for "taking the correct constitutional step" by resigning after losing his parliamentary majority.
"Muhyiddin tried hard but fell short in handling the triple crisis of Covid-19 pandemic, economic recession and political instability," he said.
Lim said the new prime minister will face a huge challenge in doing a better job and hoped that the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, initiated by Muhyiddin's administration, will be accelerated.
He added that a "reset plan" was needed to shift policymaking from containment of Covid-19 to mitigation, in preparation for the need to live with the virus. - Mkini
