Chaos at PPVs, more proof of govt’s failure in managing pandemic, says Anwar

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said the government seemed to lack focus in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.

PETALING JAYA: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has hit out at the huge crowds outside vaccination centres (PPVs), stating that this was more proof of the government’s failure to manage the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Rules are not being followed at the PPVs,” the opposition leader said in a video live-streamed on his Facebook page tonight.

“People are sometimes squeezing into one area before entering the hall, and this is despite it being a mega PPV. This is not the way to control the situation.”

Earlier today, FMT reported about the long lines at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre PPV, where vaccine recipients had to wait for up to four hours for their jabs.

There were also massive crowds at the Bukit Jalil Stadium PPV on Tuesday after the facility opened for walk-in registrations for non-Malaysian citizens.

This comes despite vaccine minister Khairy Jamaluddin stating on Aug 1 that SOPs at PPVs would be tightened and enhanced to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infections.

Anwar said that judging by the rising number of daily Covid-19 cases, death rate and number of patients categorised as brought-in-dead (BID), the government seemed to lack focus in dealing with the pandemic.

The health ministry reported today a record 21,668 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of infections to 1,342,215. There were 318 deaths reported, which took the total number of fatalities to 11,691.

“One year has gone by, and each time we have statements from the prime minister and relevant ministers saying: ‘Things will get better. Give it time. Next month it will be better, and the month after that it will be even better’,” said Anwar.

“But things are getting worse. It looks like they are not looking at this (Covid-19) seriously.” - FMT
