PETALING JAYA: Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan has asked MIC not to presume the decision of the Registrar of Societies (RoS) on the issue of the Umno Supreme Council’s status.
Shahril said any statement that the Umno leadership is only a caretaker “has not been finalised yet”.
“First, RoS itself admitted that they were still reviewing the full documentation submitted by the Umno secretary-general a few days ago,” he said in a Facebook post.
“Second, Umno still has the right to decide on further action if RoS remains with their views after reviewing all documentation submitted by the Umno secretary-general.
“The matter is related to documentation supporting the party management’s stance that the decision to postpone the party election is valid and made before June 30, 2021.”
Shahril said RoS had not given any signal or statement to question Umno’s status as a legitimate political party.
He said proposals such as changing the Barisan Nasional chairman, even if they were to be tabled, should be done behind closed doors.
MIC president SA Vigneswaran had been reported as saying recently that RoS’ “clarification” on the caretaker status of the Umno Supreme Council after the end of its 2018-2021 tenure on June 30 meant it could not make any substantive decisions.
He said a meeting should be held immediately to enable BN to determine which of the highest positions within the coalition, including that of chairman, could be handed over temporarily to another party based on consensus among its members.
“We are worried that any decision made by the BN chairman, who is also the Umno president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi), will be considered invalid and can be challenged (by law).
“To prevent this from happening, BN needs to ensure that the highest position in the coalition is handed over to any component party that has the consent of all coalition members for the time being,” he said. - FMT
