Fourth Umno leader to resign - Balik Pulau chief quits varsity board post

Another Umno leader has resigned from a government-appointed position, the fourth of such move this week, following the party's decision to withdraw support for the ruling Perikatan Nasional coalition.

Balik Pulau Umno chief Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah last night announced his resignation as a board member of Universiti Putra Malaysia.

"I hereby announce my resignation as a Universiti Putra Malaysia board member.

"This is part of my duty as a party member who will continue to abide by and respect any decisions by the party," said Shah Headan in a Facebook post.

He also shared his resignation letter dated yesterday with immediate effect.

Shah Headan's move follows three other Umno leaders in quitting their appointed posts in a number of government-linked companies - party vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin who stepped down as chairperson of Boustead Holding Bhd, Sabah Umno Youth chief Abdul Aziz Julkarnain who stepped down as Boustead independent and non-executive director, and Umno Supreme Council member Razlan Rafii who stepped down as Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) board member.

The resignations came after Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi led 11 of the party's MPs in withdrawing the party's support for the embattled prime minister.

At the cabinet level, Lenggong MP Shamsul Anuar Nasarah on Tuesday resigned as energy and natural resources minister, while Parit Sulong MP Noraini Ahmad yesterday stepped down as higher education minister. - Mkini
