KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno has released a general statement saying it will support any decision by its leadership amid the political crisis faced by the party in the peninsula.
However, it also said it will continue to back the Sabah government, under the leadership of chief minister Hajiji Noor of Bersatu.
Umno at the federal level is now at loggerheads with Hajiji’s party and has pulled out of the Bersatu-led government.
Sabah Umno said it also would abide by the “decree” of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“As stated under Article 3 of the Umno constitution, all the members and leadership of Sabah Umno fully abide by the Malay Rulers and vow to uphold and protect the federal and state constitutions.
“Sabah Umno also prays and hopes that the political crisis in the peninsula will be resolved wisely and harmoniously for the benefit of the country and its people,” it said in what seemed to be an ambiguous statement.
The party went on to say that, as the “adik bongsu” (youngest brother), it will always respect any decision made by the leadership at the federal level, despite its autonomy.
The party added that the mandate given by Sabahans to the state Umno in the 16th Sabah election will also be respected.
“As such, Sabah Umno will remain in support of the GRS government under Hajiji’s leadership.
“We hope this stand will be respected by everyone for the stability, harmony and prosperity of Sabah and its people,” the party said. - FMT
