PETALING JAYA
The road transport department (JPJ) has been given a week to take action to cut down on lengthy waiting time for customers, after a surprise visit by the head of the civil service today.

The chief secretary to the government, Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, said he found the work process to be quite lengthy when he made a surprise visit to JPJ headquarters in Putrajaya today, Bernama reported.

I have instructed the secretary-general of the transport ministry and the JPJ director-general to find a suitable method to reduce waiting times,
 he was quoted as saying.

Shamsul also said that the waiting area needs to be more conducive and customer-friendly, noting the broken chairs and the lack of fans.

Shamsul’s reprimand of JPJ comes a week after he instructed the immigration department to improve its service following negative feedback from tourists.

He said tourists had frequently reported poor treatment by immigration officers, which could potentially lead to unfavourable impressions of Malaysia being spread once they returned to their home countries.

The push for the civil service to improve their performance follows the announcement of salary increments under a new scheme that was announced last month.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had said that efficiency in the public services meant that the people did not have to wait for hours for approvals or to meet government officials.

Anwar said the public would be assessing the performance of the civil servants; if their performance was not up to par, the public would question the government’s decision to increase salaries. - FMT
