The Bungkus Kaw Kaw brand is still in the process of applying for Malaysian halal certification, says the restaurant franchise’s parent company, Ah Cheng Laksa Sdn Bhd.

In a statement today, the company said the franchise has 63 outlets.

As such, preparations for halal applications need to be done in stages and groups, and this process will take time to complete.

The company said it is optimistic that Bungkus Kaw Kaw can obtain halal certification within this year.

Our halal department is working diligently to expedite this process,

 said the company.

The company also said it had first focused on obtaining halal certification for its Ah Cheng Laksa brand last year and has now moved on to doing so for Bungkus Kaw Kaw.

“Central Kitchen Ah Cheng Laksa, which holds a Malaysian halal certificate, supplies raw materials to all Ah Cheng Laksa and Bungkus Kaw Kaw outlets.

All raw material suppliers are fully controlled by the company’s halal department.

The company’s explanation comes after the Islamic development department (Jakim) said six popular food and beverage outlets regularly patronised by Muslims are not halal-certified.

Jakim listed Johnny’s, Black Canyon, Dolly Dim Sum, Mr Dakgalbi, Bungkus Kaw Kaw and Ayam Penyet Best (except four outlets) as not having halal certificates.

Dated Sept 2, the statement has gone viral on social media. It was issued following a query on the halal status of the eateries, received through the department’s public complaints system. - FMT
