Don't know yet - Na'im says yet to be informed of GISBH RCI proposal

Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said today that he has yet to be informed of the proposed establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Global Ikhwan Service and Bussines Holding (GISBH).

This is regarding allegations of child abuse, sexual grooming, and exploitation at welfare homes run by the group.

“I don’t know yet. The issue (RCI) is not known yet,” the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) said when asked if he supported the proposal by Suhakam and would raise it to the cabinet tomorrow.

He said this when met by reporters after officiating an event organised by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council in Kuala Lumpur today.

Na’im did not elaborate further on his comments, and Malaysiakini has contacted his officer for clarification.

On Sept 13, Suhakam Children’s Commissioner Dr Farah Nini Dusuki suggested that the RCI be established immediately.

Farah also reportedly asked the National Security Council (NSC) to form a special committee to develop a comprehensive strategy to prevent abuse, child abuse, and exploitation in all child-related institutions, including charity homes.

Suhakam’s proposal received full support from Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Legal and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said and the Bar Council.

On Sept 11, police rescued 402 children in raids on 20 welfare homes operated by GISBH in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan and also arrested 171 people.

Since then, the number of arrests has risen to more than 300 individuals, including GISBH's top management, and a total of 572 victims were rescued.

Seven of those arrested were brought to court on 29 charges. - Mkini
