PETALING JAYA: Penang executive councillor S Sundarajoo is not contesting in the upcoming state DAP elections despite being included in the list of 32 candidates earlier.
While expressing gratitude at being nominated by Penang DAP delegates, the Perai assemblyman said he had declined the nomination after 5pm last Monday.
He said he was late in informing the party headquarters as he was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Penang that day.
“This is my first term (as an assemblyman and state executive council member). I think my performance is more important than going for position and power (in the party).
Let me finish my first term, it’s too premature (to be contesting for a state leadership post),
he told FMT.
Sundarajoo, a former chief operating officer of property developer Eco World Development Sdn Bhd, joined DAP in 2018 and won the Perai seat in the August 2023 state elections.
The first-term assemblyman went on to be appointed as the state housing and environment committee chairman by Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow.
With Sundarajoo stepping away from the race, 31 Penang DAP officials will battle it out for positions on the 2024/2027 state committee come Sept 22.
The 15 candidates with the most votes will then choose the next Penang DAP chairman from among themselves.
Among the notable nominees are Bukit Mertajam MP and human resources minister Steven Sim, Tanjong MP and deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh and Penang exco members Zairil Khir Johari and Jagdeep Singh Deo. - FMT
