Former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng will once again give the state DAP party election a miss.
This came amid speculation of an internal tussle within the state chapter with those allegedly aligned to the Bagan MP reportedly seeking greater control.
Among the notable candidates vying for a spot on Penang DAP's central committee are his sister Lim Hui Ying, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, and state exco members Jagdeep Singh Deo and Zairil Khir Johari.
Other candidates include party veterans Chong Eng, Soon Lip Chee, Teh Lai Heng, and Yeoh Soon Hin.
There are 32 candidates in total vying for 15 central committee positions.
The committee will then appoint among themselves key posts, including the next Penang DAP chairperson.
Speculation is rife that Hui Ying and Sim are among the contenders for the top state party post.
The Penang DAP election and convention will be held on Sept 22.
Guan Eng has never contested the Penang DAP election - even when he was the chief minister.
His successor, Chow Kon Yeow, had helmed the state DAP for 25 years but decided not to contest this year's election amid concerns that he might not win a spot in the state committee.
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, however, has assured that Chow will remain chief minister until the state assembly's term expires. - Mkini
