DBKL gives Jalan Imbi businesses 14 days to remove Chinese signboards

KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has given five business owners in Jalan Imbi 14 days to remove signboards displaying only Chinese-language text, which violates the 1982 Local Advertisement By-Law that requires the use of the national language.

“Some people still do not understand, or pretend to forget, the importance of the Malay language. The premises have been given 14 days to remove the Chinese-language signboards in Jalan Imbi here.

“Through a viral video on social media, DBKL took action to ‘refresh’ their memory about this rule. It seems that they prefer to display other languages. That’s fine, we’ll remind them with a fine and an enforcement notice,” the statement on Facebook wrote.

This action follows a viral video showing the widespread use of Chinese-language signs in the Bukit Bintang area, sparking criticism about the lack of respect for Bahasa Malaysia.

DBKL has issued fines and enforcement notices and emphasized its commitment to ensuring compliance in the future. The public is encouraged to report similar violations through DBKL’s official platform. – Focus Malaysia
