MACC raided an apartment unit in Kuala Lumpur last night, which the anti-graft agency suspected was a "safe house" that a prominent politician used to stash illegally gained cash.
According to an MACC insider, the 10pm raid was carried out as part of its investigation into the politician suspected of corruption.
The source said another suspect, whom investigators apprehended earlier to facilitate their investigation, revealed the safe house's location.
"The raiding party searched the apartment unit in Kuala Lumpur last night, and they found a huge amount of cash stashed in the premises.
"In total, there were about SG$1.5 million, equivalent to about RM5 million," the source told Malaysiakini.
According to sources, the initial investigation revealed that a businessperson rented the apartment unit to keep money for the politician.
MACC has seized the cash, allegedly kept at the unit for future political activities, as evidence.
The case is reportedly related to an MACC probe into a multi-million ringgit bribery scandal concerning a sand mining concession under a subsidiary of Selangor Menteri Besar Incorporated.
