The Great British Circus is set to dazzle audiences at Aeon Mall Kota Bharu in Kelantan with a first-of-its-kind circus show featuring an all-male cast of international artists.
According to a press release, the show has been “crafted specifically” for the PAS-ruled state where only male entertainers are allowed to perform live since a ruling was made in 2002.
One of its founders, Biliana Kirilova, said: “We have been working hard to create this all-male show that adheres to the state regulatory guidelines and are pleased to be able to bring Great British Circus in a form that can be enjoyed by all the locals here.
“One of our goals has always been to make the circus accessible to as many people as possible which includes accommodating the many layers of society from language, culture, religion and economic background,” she added.
Kirilova said to create this particular show, more new male artists have been added to the cast with redesigned performances to ensure that the same level of wonder, excitement and fun is experienced.
Daily shows will be held from Oct 16 to Nov 17.
Big Kid Entertainment (M) Sdn Bhd, the United Kingdom-based producer of the Great British Circus, has been creating circus shows in Malaysia since 2014, and this marks its first-ever tour in Kelantan.
In 2002, Kelantan announced that it had banned female entertainers from performing live in front of men to "cultivate modesty and high morals”.
All rock groups and pop bands were also barred with immediate effect.
The ruling for women performers only applied to those above the age of 12, and children of all genders were still allowed to hold live performances for the public. - Mkini
