IT’S merely an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur – but it could well be a whole world away.
The Morib-Tanjung Sepat cycling trail in Selangor is the perfect scenic weekend getaway for beginners.
This leisurely 35km round-trip journey along the coastline is an ideal escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Cyclists need to give themselves three to four hours to soak in this coastal gem’s sights, sounds and local flavours.
The cycling adventure starts at Morib Beach, about a 77km drive from Kuala Lumpur.
This beachfront spot boasts ample parking space and offers a perfect setup zone for cyclists.
From here, one can join Federal Route 5, which runs from Klang to Port Dickson.
One advice for those taking this route: Start early to avoid the midday heat and reduce traffic encounters.
Batu Laut, located halfway along the route, is a charming seaside town with a scenic stop and a twist – a training ground for dinghy-class sailboats.
If you are lucky, you can catch a fleet of these small sailboats skillfully riding the waves – a delightful sight that adds a nautical touch to your cycling journey.
This is also a place to refill your water bottles before the final push to Tanjung Sepat.
This coastal route is mainly flat, making it an excellent choice for beginners.
However, watch out for patches of uneven road surfaces, which are caused by the regular wear and tear from heavy vehicle traffic.
Cyclists with low-profile tyres should be extra cautious of debris that can cause punctures.
As you near Tanjung Sepat, you’ll pass through two main areas: Tanjung Sepat Darat on the left and Tanjung Sepat Laut on the right.
The gateway to Tanjung Sepat Laut is marked by a simple police station and an unassuming arch that welcomes you into the coastal village.
Once in Tanjung Sepat, take time to explore its local treasures.
A must-visit is the iconic “Lover’s Bridge,” a romantic seaside spot on the northern edge of town.
This location is popular among couples and photographers, and during wedding season, it’s bustling with brides and grooms capturing picture-perfect moments.
For coffee lovers, Kwo Zha B Coffee is a cosy spot where you can enjoy locally roasted coffee in a laid-back setting.
Right next door is the famous Tanjung Sepat preserved vegetable pau shop.
After a long ride, nothing beats the satisfying combo of fresh coffee and warm pau – a tasty way to refuel before you head back to Morib.
If you plan to ride this route, remember to stay hydrated, bring a tyre repair kit and carry basic tools for any mid-ride mishaps.
Although the route may be beginner-friendly, it’s always best to come prepared for a smooth, enjoyable ride.
So, grab your bicycle, breathe in the sea air and enjoy the Morib-Tanjung Sepat cycling route.
Safe travels, and happy cycling! - Star
