PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has extended his condolences to the family of tycoon Ananda Krishnan, who died today aged 86.
Anwar said Ananda will be remembered for his contributions to the corporate world, philanthropy, and society.
“I extend my condolences to his family and wish them strength in facing this difficult time,” he said in a Facebook post.
Ananda’s business acumen led to the creation of a vast empire spanning sectors such as telecommunications (Maxis Bhd), media and satellite (Astro and Measat), and oil and gas (Bumi Armada).
He was involved in real estate development and also controlled Tanjong Plc, which encompasses TGV Cinemas and leisure operations.
Forbes reported that Ananda had a net worth of US$5.1 billion as of Nov 27, making him the third wealthiest Malaysian.
Known for his philanthropic works, Ananda played a crucial role in financing global events like Live Aid, and has consistently contributed to charitable causes, temples, educational institutions and other organisations.
He is survived by his son, Ven Ajahn Siripanyo, whose mother, Momwajarongse Suprinda Chakraban, is of Thai royal descent. Ven later became a Buddhist monk.
