PETALING JAYA: Penang PKR Youth is calling for a PAS assemblyman to be suspended after the latter cited an unverified report which claimed that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was among the wealthiest leaders in the world.
The wing’s chief Fadzli Roslan is also demanding the assemblyman issue a public apology over the “irresponsible” claim.
“Malaysians are tired of this type of politicking which is aimed at causing confusion and sowing hatred.
“PAS must acknowledge that the era of politics of hate is over and the people are clamouring for a transparent and progressive leadership as well as one that is development oriented,” he said in a statement.
While Fadzli did not identify the elected representative, Penaga assemblyman Yusni Mat Piah had made the claim when debating the state budget earlier today.
Yusni had cited an online report with a list of the world’s richest leaders which included the likes of Anwar, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and outgoing US president Joe Biden.
Others who made the list include Singapore prime minister Lawrence Wong and the president of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Yusni’s claim prompted Bukit Tengah assemblyman Gooi Hsiao Leung of PKR to demand a retraction.
Gooi also accused Yusni of employing “cheap tricks”. Yusni, however, stood by his remarks and said he was prepared to be referred to the rights and privileges committee.
Fadzli said such “wild allegations” were not only embarrassing, but highlighted PAS’s penchant to slander others.
As an elected representative, he said the assemblyman should not be spreading fake news to smear the prime minister’s image.
“Such tactics reek of desperation.” - FMT
