PETALING JAYA
The demarcation of the border between Selangor and Kuala Lumpur is expected to be finalised within two years, says Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

Amirudin said that the survey and mapping department is conducting detailed measurements, which will be followed by a formal agreement to set the boundaries.

“We want to avoid boundaries cutting through kitchens, verandas, or specific premises,” Bernama reported him as saying at a press conference.

“Efforts will be made to clearly define the borders.”

On Feb 5, Amirudin reportedly said defining the boundaries was crucial as they would affect tax collection, local authority enforcement, and utility maintenance between the two states.

However, he acknowledged that it was a complex task due to the dense development in some areas, unlike the forested or agricultural zones involved in past agreements with Pahang and Negeri Sembilan.

Amirudin also clarified that the Selangor government has no plans to reclaim Kuala Lumpur as a district, respecting the 1974 agreement that ceded the federal territory to the federal government.

He explained that the agreement was based on conditions such as the presence of the federal government’s administrative centre, Parliament and the parliamentary constituencies in the capital city.

Selangor’s administrative centre moved from Kuala Lumpur to Shah Alam, the state’s capital, in December 1978.

“We cannot reclaim Kuala Lumpur for now. We will wait until a leader decides to relocate Parliament elsewhere, then we can propose turning Kuala Lumpur into a new district of Selangor,” Amirudin said.

This was in response to a question from Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran in the state assembly about the Greater Klang Valley project. - FMT
