Graft videos aimed at weakening my govt, says Hajiji

Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor said he is leaving it to the relevant authorities to investigate the corruption claims against assemblymen.

PETALING JAYA
Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor says a series of videos implicating Sabah assemblymen in corrupt practices is seemingly being released to destabilise his government.

Speaking to reporters after next year’s state budget was tabled at the state assembly in Kota Kinabalu, Hajiji insisted that his administration remains “solid” despite the rapidly developing scandal.

Hajiji also said he was unable to comment on a video released by Malaysiakini today implicating deputy chief minister Shahelmey Yahya, the fourth Sabah assemblyman allegedly seen discussing bribes with a businessman.

“This is difficult for me (to comment on). I cannot comment and I leave it to the relevant authorities to investigate this matter,” he said, reported Sabah Media.

“There are certain motives behind it, so that’s all I can say … We remain strong and united, both within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition and also Pakatan Harapan (PH) Plus.

“We are very solid. So that is (our) position. Let us wait for the investigation from the relevant authorities,” he added.

Previously, Malaysiakini reported that it had sighted eight videos from a whistleblower showing discussions between a businessman and assemblymen about bribes for a project licence.

The whistleblower’s lawyer said his client was willing to provide the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) with evidence if the anti-graft agency could guarantee that he would not be investigated.

However, MACC chief Azam Baki said the commission rejected this request as they could not provide a written guarantee of immunity without detailed information about the alleged improper conduct.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had also said the whistleblower cannot expect protection if he was involved in corruption.

Hajiji previously maintained he had nothing to hide and said his administration was ready to cooperate with MACC regarding the matter. - FMT
